CONTINUED~ According to the study, this can mean that after they are rescued, the dogs will need rehabilitation - and love - to overcome fears, phobias, heightened sensitivity to touch, house soiling and obsessive and repetitive behavior such as spinning in circles. The study's lead author, Frank McMillan, DVM, Director of Well Being Studies for Best Friends Animal Society, elaborated "we can now scientifically confirm how truly destructive these places are for the dogs". Dr. McMillan worked on the study with researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, James Serpell and Deborah Duffy. The study was based on a definition of puppy mill that defined them as "commercial breeding operations..., ... large scale facilities where dogs are confined in small enclosures for their entire lives with little to no exercise or positive human contact-for the sole purpose of mass-producing puppies to sell in retail pet stores and via the Internet."

HUMANE SOCIETY UNITED STATES OFFERS NEWPORT PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Wayne Pacelle. President of the Humane Society of the United States speaks about supporting law enforcement in a Puppy Mill Raid. CAPS -- COMPANION ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY -- a national organization working with Senator Vittor on drafting legislation, and assists the USDA with investigations of breeders, has graciously offered to do a comprehensive report on Newport's USDA Puppy Pet Stores for the Council of Newport Beach.

We are anxiously awaiting the acceptance of such prestigious guidance by Mayor and Council, and are very much looking forward to Wayne Pacelle making his personal call to City Hall in national recognition for our exceptional Humane Leadership in support of an ordinance banning the sale of USDA Puppy Mill Puppies in our city. FOSTER GIRL CHIHUAHUA 'BELLA" FROM DEATH ROW SHELTER

(Click Photo) ~ ~ "THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING" ~ MY "BELLA" is one year and a half and rescued in the last minutes of her life. She was dumped in the shelter with her mother. Both shivering with fear and starvation, being too scared to eat, we worked at a furious pace collecting funds to get them out. Unfortunately by the time we had gotten funds together, the shelter had already murdered her mother, leaving 3lb.tiny Bella, terrorized and frozen in fear as her mother was ripped away from her to never return. She spent 2 nights by herself in a cold cement cell with no warmth in shock and frozen. The shelter never gave us a reason they felt the need to kill her mother leaving Bella alone, no extra space was made available, they callously stated "HER TIME WAS UP". I hand fed her for weeks to get her to eat, I had to follow her around the house just to pick her up, as she scattered away, coward with her belly down to the floor. She was scared of humans and everything around her. Although she stuck to me like glue when I held her, it took her days to lift her head and look at me in the eyes. When she finally did, she wouldn't stop staring with a desperate hopeful gaze of "are you for real?" She has bounced back beautifully! Her twinkle has replaced her old vacant and dark dull stare of hopelessness. I call her my little "Pony" as she prances around the house and rears on her hind feet to dance and play. "Bella" the beautiful little warrior for life, is the most playful, funny, and loving little soul.
